Police arrested a 33-year-old man in Stephenville on Tuesday after he fled from officers attempting a traffic stop. He now faces charges of dangerous operation, flight from police, has been issued tickets under the Highway Traffic Act and saw his vehicle seized and impounded by police.

At approximately 3:00 p.m., on Aug. 19, an officer patrolling in a residential Stephenville neighbourhood, observed a dirt bike being driven at a high rate of speed along Gallant Street. Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the off-road vehicle operator failed to stop and fled. The officer did not pursue in the interest of police and public safety.

Officers conducted extensive patrols of the community. The dirt bike was located again by police, this time on Dump Road, however the operator failed to stop a second time. A short time later, the operator was located and taken into custody without incident.

The 33-year-old Stephenville man was arrested and faces charges under the Criminal Code, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and two counts of flight from police. He was released from custody on conditions and is set to appear in court at a future date.

The man was also issued tickets under the Highway Traffic Act for driving without a valid licence, operating an unregistered vehicle, operating without a valid insurance policy and driving a motor vehicle while stunting. His dirt bike was seized and impounded.
