Canada to play historic first World Cup knockout match against South Africa today
Canada’s men’s national soccer team will make history once again Sunday playing in its first ever knockout match at the FIFA World Cup.
Canada faces South Africa at Los Angeles Stadaium at 4:30 p.m. Newfoundland time. It’s the first time either country has made it out of the group stage and into the knockout round at the World Cup.
Canada missed a chance to play at home in Vancouver when they lost their final match of the group stage 2-1 to Switzerland. But Canada’s record of 1-1-1 was still good enough for second place in Group B and a berth in the Round of 32.
Despite the loss, Canada lucked into a slightly more favourable matchup for their first knockout game. Canada is ranked 32nd in the FIFA World Rankings while South Africa is ranked 54th, meaning Canada is favoured to win the match. But South Africa can’t be underestimated, as they upset 31st ranked South Korea in their final group stage match to clinch a playoff spot.
