The stage is set for the biggest match in world football. Defending champion Argentina takes on Spain in the FIFA World Cup Final this afternoon after both nations survived a grueling month-long tournament.

Argentina punched its ticket with a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England in the semifinals, scoring twice in the closing minutes. Spain earned its place by defeating France 2-0, continuing an impressive run that included knockout wins over Portugal and Belgium.

England defeated France 6-4 Saturday to win a wide-open bronze medal game.

The 2026 tournament was the first World Cup since 2002 to be hosted by multiple nations. Mexico became the first country to host the World Cup three times, having hosted the 1970 and 1986 tournaments. The United States previously hosted the World Cup in 1994, while it was Canada’s first time hosting the tournament. As host nations, the U.S., Mexico and Canada all automatically qualified for the tournament.

Canada also enjoyed one of its best World Cup performances ever. The Canadians advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating South Africa in the opening knockout round, before their tournament came to an end with a 3-0 loss to Morocco. It marked another significant step forward for the Canadian program on home soil.

Now, only one match remains. Spain will look to capture another World Cup title, while Argentina is aiming to become the first nation in nearly 70 years to win back-to-back World Cups.

Kickoff is Sunday in New Jersey.
