Whitbourne RCMP arrests prohibited driver, lays charge of flight from police

Justice, News

Whitbourne RCMP arrested a 54-year-old Dildo man Monday night for failing to stop for police back on Thursday August 13, after officers attempted to stop the driver for operating his motor vehicle while prohibited from doing so under a Canada-wide driving ban.

Just before 8:00 p.m. on August 13, a Whitbourne RCMP officer on patrol was flagged down by a concerned resident who reported an off-road motorcycle being driven in a dangerous manner along Front Road in Dildo.

The officer spotted the described dirt bike being operated by an individual prohibited from driving anywhere in Canada. Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver failed to stop and fled at a high rate of speed. Officers did not pursue the vehicle in the interest of public and police safety.

Then, on August 17 at approximately 7:40 p.m., Whitbourne RCMP responded to a driving complaint, involving the same individual, operating a vehicle along Anderson Cove Road towards New Harbour.

Police conducted patrols and Barry Martin, 54, was later located and arrested at a residence in the community.

He was later released and is expected to appear in court in September 2026 to face Criminal Code charges of flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of operating a motor vehicle while prohibited and two counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

His vehicle was seized and impounded by police.
