Two years since the return of ‘The Lucky 7’: A day marked in history
Two years ago today, the New-Wes-Valley wharf was packed with hundreds of people, ready to welcome home seven very lucky fishermen.
Eugene Carter, David Tiller, Toby Peddle, Jordan Lee King, Robbie Firmage, Andy Hunt, and Harold Howell, defied the odds of the harsh Atlantic Ocean after surviving more than 48 hours floating in a life raft. That’s after their fishing vessel, The Elite Navigator, caught on fire and the crew was forced to abandon ship.
It was the early morning of July 20, 2024, two days after the boat and crew were reported overdue, word quickly spread that all seven men were found alive, and in good health. Their life raft was spotted by a SARS helicopter pilot, and reported to the Canadian Coast Guard, who worked with search and rescue to facilitate their safe return to shore.
As the crew made their way back home, in poured residents from New-Wes-Valley and beyond. Hundreds of people eagerly lined the wharf to welcome home what felt like seven miracles.

In the days and weeks to come, the crew would be nicknamed ‘The Lucky 7’, and their story would make national headlines. With the TSB report showing no fault to the crew, or owner of the boat months later, it was the perfect ending to an already remarkable story.
