The Salvation Army celebrating 5th anniversary of Ches Penney Centre of Hope

News

The Salvation Army will host a special open house today to celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Ches Penney Centre of Hope.

The event will highlight five years of service and impact in the community, with remarks from Salvation Army representatives and an opportunity to tour the facility.

The multimillion-dollar facility brings the Army’s ability to serve the vulnerable to a whole new level. For more than a century, The Salvation Army operated programs on Springdale Street in downtown St. John’s to meet community needs in the best possible way. At the Ches Penney Centre of Hope, the five-storey building provides a greater capacity and opportunity to welcome all people who come through the doors, and to be a transforming influence in the community. The services and essential care offered include 20 permanent supportive housing units, health care, employment training, mental-health and addiction services, a kitchen and dining area that serves up hundreds of hot meals every week, and an expanded food bank with refrigerators and freezers.

About The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army is an international Christian organization that began its work in Canada in 1882. In Bermuda, the Army has been at work since 1896. Today, it is the largest non-governmental direct provider of social services in the country, offering hope and support to vulnerable people in 400 communities across Canada and Bermuda and in more than 130 countries around the world. Its services include hunger relief through food banks and meal programs; shelter and housing support; addiction rehabilitation; long-term and palliative care; and life-skills development such as budgeting and cooking. We also offer children and youth programming, including after-school activities, camps, school nutrition, and Christmas assistance such as food hampers and toys.
