St. Mary’s provides update on former fish sauce plant

Business, News

The Town of St. Mary’s says the process to remove the abandoned former fish sauce plant is moving forward. The decades-old abandoned plant, which sits on the water in the heart of the town, has
caused environmental and health concerns, heightened when high winds in early 2026 caused the front wall of the building to collapse.

Now, the town’s council says a consultant has completed and submitted all documents to the province to proceed to tender the project. The town of Sunnyside will be helping with the removal and disposal of sauce waste at their waste management facility.

Provincial municipal affairs minister Chris Tibbs has assured the town’s council that cleanup of the plant will be completed by summer.
