Spain beats Argentina 1-0 in extra time to win second FIFA World Cup
Spain are world champions for the second time in history after defeating Argentina 1-0 in extra time in the World Cup final in New Jersey on Sunday, carried live on NTV and NTV+.
It was a dominant performance by Spain from start to finish as Argentina did not record a single shot at goal during regulation play. The only saving grace for Argentina was goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who made several spectacular saves to keep the game close.
But a late red card for Argentina left them short-handed in extra time. The dam finally burst at the start of the second extra half when Ferran Torres scored for Spain.
This is Spain’s second World Cup title, the last one coming in South Africa in 2010. Lionel Messi and Argentina will go home as runners-up, despite their hopes to become the first repeat champions since Brazil in 1962. England claimed third place, their best performance since winning it all in 1966, after a chaotic 6-4 win over France on Saturday.
The final brings to an end the 2026 World Cup, hosted in Canada, the United States and Mexico. For Canada, the tournament will be remembered for its many firsts: the first World Cup matches played in Canada, the first draw and first win for Canada, and the first knockout victory for Canada after the memorable 1-0 result over South Africa in the Round of 32.
The next FIFA World Cup in 2030 will be played in Portugal, Spain and Morocco.
