The St. John’s Regional Fire Department has announced the retirement of Captain Gina Burke, a trailblazer who made history as the department’s first female firefighter.

Captain Burke began her groundbreaking career in 1992 when she was hired at the newly-opened Mount Pearl station, marking a significant milestone for the department and the region. Her dedication and professionalism paved the way for future generations of women in firefighting, proving that gender is no barrier to serving with courage and excellence.

Throughout her career, Captain Burke rose through the ranks, earning her promotion to Fire Lieutenant in April 2009 and later achieving the rank of Fire Captain in May 2013. In addition to her leadership roles, she served as a member of the department’s High Angle Rescue Team, Water Rescue Team, Confined Space Team and was also a trained paramedic, further demonstrating her commitment to public safety and specialized emergency response.

“Captain Burke has been an inspiration to all of us,” said Fire Chief Sherry Colford. “Her service broke barriers and opened doors for others to follow. We are grateful for her contributions and wish her the very best in her retirement.”

Since her groundbreaking hire in 1992, the department has grown to include nine more female firefighters among its ranks.

Her retirement begins Feb. 1.
