RNC warns of online group ‘764’ targeting and extorting youths
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is warning the public of online groups targeting and extorting youth online.
Police are aware of a violent online group known as the “764” which deliberately targets, victimizes and recruits children.
The RNC is warning residents that online extremist groups are coercing youth through online gaming platforms, such as Roblox and Minecraft, and are extorting them by having them commit criminal acts such as producing child exploitation material. These online groups are also known to persuade youth to self-harm.
The RNC is urging parents to teach responsible online behavior and set guidelines to promote a safe online experience. There are some proactive measures that can taken to protect youth:
- Only use tablets or devices in common areas at home. Parents are advised to keep devices connected to the internet out of bedrooms and other private spaces.
- Know your children’s usernames and passwords and regularly monitor their online activity.
- Set parental controls to reduce the risk of exposure to sexually explicit content.
- Explain that pictures should only be exchanged with parental permission.
- Emphasize that once pictures are sent to others, they cannot be retracted.
- Discuss appropriate and inappropriate material and maintain open dialogue with your children.
- Teach your children to never give out personal information without your permission.
The RNC is reminding the public to contact police immediately if you believe your child is a victim of these crimes. To report suspicious online activity, call the RNC at 709-729-8000.
