RCMP arrest three in relation to Harbour Grace robbery, attempted murder

Justice, News

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit and East District General Investigation Section (GIS) have arrested three people in relation to an early morning home invasion and a subsequent attempted homicide in Harbour Grace on Friday. Police believe these were targeted attacks, where the victims and suspects were known to each other. Christopher Bursey, Steven Clowe and Travis Hunt will all appear in Harbour Grace Provincial Court on Monday.

On July 3, Trinity-Conception District RCMP responded to a report of a break and enter at a residence in Harbour Grace. Three suspects forced entry into the home, and one occupant was assaulted with a weapon. That victim was transported to hospital for treatment of injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening in nature.

While investigating the break and enter, police were called to a report of a hit-and-run collision involving a pick-up truck and a pedestrian outside a second residence in Harbour Grace. The pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit, East District GIS and the Forensic Identification Section were engaged, and the initial investigation determined that these incidents were related. The victims and suspects are known to each other, and the hit-and-run was determined to be an act of retaliation in relation to the earlier break, enter and assault.

With the assistance of Trinity-Conception District RCMP officers, three suspects were located and taken into custody without incident, ensuring that the situation did not escalate further.

Christopher Bursey, 44, and Steven Clowe, 36, were arrested and charged in relation to the home invasion.

Bursey is charged with:

·         Robbery

·         Breaking and entering with intent

·         Aggravated assault

·         Disguise with intent

·         Failure to comply with a condition of a release order

Clowe faces charges of:

·         Robbery

·         Breaking and entering with intent

·         Aggravated assault

Police also arrested 39-year-old Travis Hunt in relation to the hit-and-run. Hunt has been charged with one count of attempted murder.

All three men are scheduled to appear in provincial court today.

The investigation is continuing, with additional charges possible.

Investigators are asking witnesses and anyone with information about these crimes to contact police. In addition, anyone with video surveillance or dash cam footage from the areas of Devonshire Road and Harvey Street on Friday, July 3 between 3:00 and 7:00 a.m. to contact the RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador Major Crimes Unit at 709-772-5433.
