Province updates Labrador wildfire efforts, evacuation orders remain in place
UPDATE – Tuesday, June 30, 2026 – 9:30 p.m.
The Walsh River fire was active in the afternoon and crossed the railway in several locations, but fire growth was limited and directed towards an old burn area from the 2024 wildfire. Suppression activity will continue on this fire tomorrow.
Water bomber action at De Mille Lake and Blueberry Hill east of the Labrador West region reduced wildfire activity in these areas today.
Evacuation orders in these areas remain in place.
The Esker Road wildfire reached the north side of the Trans-Labrador Highway, but suppression activity prevented the fire from crossing the highway and there are no immediate concerns for infrastructure in the area. The highway is open and RNC officers and department Conservation Officers will monitor the area through the night.
Wildfire suppression will continue tomorrow with ground crews, waterbombers and helicopters from the provincial fleet, and a bird dog aircraft from New Brunswick.
The department continues to monitor active wildfires in remote locations.
