Police arrests man for attempted arson
Burin Peninsula RCMP arrested a 46-year-old man in late Thursday afternoon after responding to reports from concerned residents about a possible arson. Michael Billard was located, arrested and charged with mischief, arson and uttering threats.
Shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 22nd, Burin Peninsula RCMP received a call from concerned citizens who had seen a male attempt to set a residence on fire and causing damage to the property. Witnesses also reported that the man had a knife and was waving it in an aggressive matter.
Police identified the man as Michael Billard, 46, of Fortune. Billard fled the area on an all-terrain vehicle, prompting an increased police presence as officers worked to locate him. After an extensive search, Billard was arrested at his residence without further incident.
Billard has been charged with:
- Arson – damage to property (except motor vehicle)
- Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
- Uttering threats against a person
- Mischief under $5,000 – Damage to Property (except motor vehicle)
- Mischief equal to or under $5,000 – Damage to Motor Vehicle
The investigation remains ongoing at this time.
