NL Regiment fall 3-2 and 4-3 to Moncton Wildcats in entertaining weekend series
The Newfoundland Regiment have just a single point to show for what was a very strong series effort against the Moncton Wildcats on Saturday and Sunday evening at the Mary Brown’s Centre.
With Moncton leading 2-0 with minutes left in regulation on Saturday, the visitors looked to be comfortable in game one of the series before Regiment captain Justin Larose gave the home team life as he cut it to 2-1 with 92 seconds left to play. Tyson Goguen sent the crowd into a frenzy as he tied the game with 39 seconds left in regulation’s securing a point in the process but Gabe Smith would spoil the party on a Moncton powerplay 1:46 into overtime as the Wildcats would hold on for a 3-2 road victory.
Moncton jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the opening 6:14 on Sunday before Larose replied nine minutes into the contest to cut it to 2-1. The Wildcats weren’t done doing damage in the first period however as they tacked on two more before the intermission to make it 4-1 for the visitors after one.
Marek Danicek did everything in his power to get the Regiment back into the game on Sunday as he scored midway through the middle frame and again with just 32 seconds left in regulation but the home side would get no closer as the Wildcats held on for the 4-3 win.
Newfoundland outshot Moncton 43-20 in the rematch and netminder Louis-Antoine Denault was steady in goal starting both games.
Halifax come into town next weekend for the final regular season games on the schedule. Puck drop on Friday is set for 7 p.m. while Saturday gets underway at 4 p.m.
