Mother of a missing teen who has since been located speaks out on the need for better access to resources

Justice, News

The mother of a teenager from Springdale who was the subject of a missing persons report by the RCMP last week is exclusively speaking with NTV News about her personal experience, but also the need for better access to mental health resources for youth in this province.

Jillyssa Newman came to NTV News after her daughter went missing with another teen last week. They have both since been located safely. Jillyssa says her daughter isn’t completely innocent in some police matters, but she’s also just a kid, who needs help.

Newman is also fighting for accountability. Whether it’s her daughter, or another youth, she feels the consequences for their actions are too lenient. She says that most times, police instances involving her daughter get brushed off.

Newman says she has used every resource in this province when it comes to helping her daughter. She admits there are resources and avenues in Newfoundland and Labrador, but says it’s like going through a revolving door trying to obtain the services.

NTV’s Marykate O’Neill will have this exclusive story coming up at 5:30 p.m. on First Edition and 6:00 p.m. on the NTV Evening Newshour.
