Man charged after reported gunfire near homes and trails in Paradise

A 30-year-old man is facing several firearms charges after police responded to reports of gunfire in Paradise on Friday evening.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says officers were called to the Carlisle Drive area at about 8:40 p.m. after residents reported hearing four gunshots.

Police searched the area on foot and say they heard additional gunfire before locating and arresting a 30-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman.

Officers seized a .22-calibre rifle and ammunition.

Police say the alleged shooting occurred near residential neighbourhoods, schools and busy walking trails.

The man has been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, careless use of a firearm or ammunition, breaching firearms regulations, unauthorized possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm.

The woman was released and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date. The man was held in custody to appear before a judge.
