Happy Canada Day! Hundreds gather for sunrise ceremony to kick off Canada Day; superhero Captain Canada makes appearance

News

Canada Day in Newfoundland and Labrador began with a patriotic tradition as hundreds gathered before dawn for the annual Sunrise Ceremony at Signal Hill in St. John’s this morning.

As the first rays of sunlight broke over the city, people in this province proudly raised the Maple Leaf, sang the national anthem, and reflected on the country’s history, diversity, and shared values. The ceremony marked the official start of Canada Day celebrations across the province.

Adding a touch of superhero spirit to the morning was Captain Canada, the homegrown Canadian superhero created by NTV founder Geoff Stirling and Newfoundland Broadcasting Company (NBC) President and CEO Scott Stirling. Captain Canada spent the morning posing for photos, greeting children and families, and helping spread a message of pride, unity, and the incredible spirit that defines Canada.

It was a fitting way to kick off the nation’s birthday. NTV’s Beth Penney was there and will have more at 6.
