Hogan welcomes proposed federal move to restrict social media access for children under 16
Opposition Leader John Hogan says he’s pleased to learn Prime Minister Mark Carney is considering moving forward with legislation aimed at restricting social media access for kids under the age of 16.
“Just a few weeks ago, I introduced a motion in the House of Assembly calling for regulatory changes to restrict children’s access to social media and better protect young people from online harms.
I’m pleased to see Prime Minister Carney moving forward with legislation aimed at doing the same.
The impacts of social media on children and youth are real concerns that deserve serious action at all levels of government.”
It comes after several national news outlets have reported that the federal government plans to propose a ban on social media use for children under the age of 16 as part of its highly anticipated online harms bill that will be introduced Wednesday.
The proposed social media ban for youth under 16 would follow action first taken in Australia, where the measure took effect last December.
