‘Hockey Hits Hunger’ returns to Mary Brown’s Centre Sunday in support of community food banks

News, Sports

Waterford Valley High School, in partnership with the Mary Brown’s Centre and the BMO High School Hockey League, has announced the return of ‘Hockey Hits Hunger’ on Sunday, Jan. 18 in support of the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank.

Building on the success of last year’s event, which generated both significant food and cash donations, this year’s ‘Hockey Hits Hunger’ aims to make an even greater impact at a critical time of year for local food banks. All food and monetary donations collected at the event will go directly to help families in our community who are facing food insecurity.

Food insecurity means that many individuals and families do not have reliable access to enough affordable, nutritious food. Rising food prices, housing costs, and other financial pressures have increased the number of people who rely on food banks. According to Food Banks Canada, food bank usage has doubled in the last five years, and many food banks are struggling to keep up with demand.

Events like Hockey Hits Hunger help ensure that shelves are stocked and families can access the support they need.

“This is a student-led initiative at Waterford Valley High,” said William Woodford, a student at the high school who leads the Outreach Team. “We care deeply about supporting their community, and we are inviting hockey teams, schools, families, and fans to come together on January 18 to support the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank and help ensure that everyone has access to the food they need.”

The 2026 edition of ‘Hockey Hits Hunger’ will feature a full day of high school hockey at the Mary Brown’s Centre, showcasing teams from across the BMO High School Hockey League on Jan. 18. Spectators are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items and cash donations in support of the food bank.
