Ferryland RCMP arrests man for firearms offences

Justice, News

Police arrested a 36-year-old man near Witless Bay on Saturday after a traffic stop resulted in the seizure of firearms and ammunition. Darron Rumbolt faces six criminal charges including unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless use of a firearm and obstructing a peace officer.

On March 7, around 3:00 p.m., officers patrolling near the intersection of Southern Shore Highway and Witless Bay Line noticed a vehicle with a damaged licence plate and initiated a traffic stop. During the stop, police observed a quantity of unstamped tobacco products and arrested the driver and passenger without incident.

During a search of the vehicle, police located and seized two rifles, an imitation firearm and ammunition. The driver, 36-year-old Darron Rumbolt of Mary’s Harbour, provided a false name to officers and could not produce a valid licence for the firearms. Police also determined that the firearms were not being safely transported.

Rumbolt was transported to the Holyrood detachment and held in custody to appear in court on charges of:

  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle
  • Resisting or obstructing a peace officer
  • Failure to comply with a condition of a release order

The passenger was released without charges. The vehicle was seized by police.

The investigation is continuing, with additional charges possible.
