Celebrating Shakespeare International Performance Festival coming to LSPU Hall
On Monday, Shakespeare By The Sea Festival announced that St. John’s will host STACON26, the annual conference of the Shakespeare Theatre Association, from January 5-10, 2026. Marking the third time that this event has been held in Canada, and a very first for Newfoundland and Labrador.
This international gathering is open to members affiliated with a Shakespeare company only, but there will also be an international Shakespeare festival at the iconic LSPU Hall.
Running during the same week in January, the Celebrating Shakespeare International Performance Festival at the LSPU Hall will feature diverse presentations of Shakespeare and Shakespeare-adjacent plays from Australia, Italy, and the United States… and it’s open to the public.
NIGHT ONE: Hannah Johnson’s Shakespeare’s Sirens (Flagstaff Shakespeare, Arizona, US); plus Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night (ShakespearED, Perth, Australia);- NIGHT TWO: Lisa Wolpe’s Shakespeare and the Alchemy of Gender (Verona Shakespeare Festival, Italy);
- NIGHT THREE: Debra Ann Byrd’s Becoming Othello: A Black Girl’s Journey (Harlem Shakespeare, New York, US);
- NIGHT FOUR: Will Willhelm’s Gender Play or, what you Will (Island Shakespeare, Washington State, US);
- NIGHT FIVE: Madeline Sayet’s Where We Belong (Mohegan Tribe / Connecticut, US).
