Canada makes history with first ever FIFA World Cup victory
Canada’s men’s soccer team made history Thursday winning its first ever match at the FIFA World Cup.
It was a thoroughly dominating performance by Canada as they beat Qatar 6-0 before a jubilant home crowd in Vancouver. The margin of victory was vital as it puts Canada ahead of Switzerland in the Group B standings based on goal differential. Even though the teams are tied in points, Canada will only need a draw against Switzerland in the final group stage match to clinch first place and secure home field advantage to start the knockout stage.
The game was marred when Ismael Kone suffered a serious injury and had to be taken off the field on a stretcher. He was taken to hospital to stabilize his leg, which was in a brace. Qatar received two red cards in the match, ending the game short-handed with just nine players on the field.
Canada plays Switzerland next Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. Newfoundland time.
