Bay St. George RCMP stops stolen vehicle, arrests impaired driver

Justice, News

Bay St. George RCMP arrested a 30-year-old man Friday night after a traffic stop revealed that the vehicle he was driving had been reported stolen. The man was also provided a demand for a blood sample, as officers suspected he was impaired by drugs.

Just before 11:00 p.m. on July 10, officers patrolling the Trans-Canada Highway near Flat Bay observed a vehicle with an out-of-province licence plate speeding and initiated a traffic stop. A check of the vehicle’s records determined that it had been reported stolen to the municipal police department in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Police also detected an odour of cannabis, and the driver performed poorly when asked to complete a Standardized Field Sobriety Test.

The 30-year-old New Brunswick man was taken into custody without incident for impaired operation and possession of property obtained by crime.

He was provided with a demand for a blood sample, and was transported to a nearby hospital for collection. Police are waiting on the results of laboratory testing to determine if charges of impaired operation are appropriate.

The man was released from custody and will appear in provincial court in September 2026 in relation to one Criminal Code charge of possession of property obtained by crime.

The investigation is ongoing.
