Sentencing hearing for former teacher, coach Markus Hicks set for Wednesday

Justice, News

The sentencing former teacher and volleyball coach Markus Hicks is scheduled to begin Wednesday at provincial court in St. John’s.

Hicks pleaded guilty to more than four dozen sex-related charges. They include 13 counts of sexual assault, along with being disguised with intent to commit a crime, possessing and receiving child pornography and child luring.

It was a case that shocked the school and sports communities. Hicks committed numerous sexual offences against 16 boys and young men — some of whom were his former students.  The 34-year-old deceived his victims, messaging them under fake female names on social media and luring them into encounters, often to his house in Paradise.

Several victim impacts statements will be presented at the sentencing hearing. Lawyers will also offer suggestions on Hicks’ sentence before Chief Judge Robin Fowler renders the final decision.

NTV will be there to bring you the latest in the case.
