Police stop two impaired drivers

Justice, News

Two impaired drivers had their licenses suspended and vehicles seized by RCMP Traffic Services on Sunday.

Shortly after 1:00 p.m. on March 1, an RCMP Traffic Services East officer stopped a vehicle observed speeding on the Trans-Canada Highway near Avondale. The driver showed signs of impairment, and a roadside breath test was administered. The results were over the provincial limit, but under the criminal threshold for impaired operation. The 20-year-old driver’s license was suspended roadside, his vehicle was impounded and he was ticketed under the Highway Traffic Act for open or unsealed alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Later that evening, at approximately 5:00 p.m., RCMP Traffic Services West conducted a traffic stop in Felix Cove. The 60-year-old man’s license was suspended, and his vehicle was seized and impounded after a roadside breath test confirmed he was over the provincial, but under the criminal, limit for alcohol.

The provincial limit for alcohol in Newfoundland and Labrador is 0.05% blood-alcohol concentration (BAC). Surpassing this threshold can result in provincial penalties such as roadside license suspensions and vehicle seizures.
