Missing hiker located safe
The RNC, with the help of Rovers Ground Search and Rescue, located an injured hiker on the East Coast Trail.
The RNC received a report of a missing person shortly before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. The 23-year-old female was visiting the province and had set out alone on a hike of the East Coast Trail destined for the Spout.
A ground search and rescue team was deployed with support from an RNC drone operator. The woman was located cold and wet but otherwise uninjured around 5 a.m. today after an extensive search.
The RNC is reminding hikers using Newfoundland and Labrador’s trails of the following safety precautions:
- Plan your route and inform others: Always inform a friend of family member of your planned route and expected return time.
- Bring proper equipment: Ensure you are wearing proper footwear and bright clothing. Carry extra layers for sudden weather changes, a map or compass, and a basic first-aid kit.
- Stay hydrated and fueled: Pack more water and food than you think you need. Dehydration and fatigue are common factors leading to hiker-related calls to emergency services.
- Whenever possible, hike with a partner or in a group.
- Always bring a fully-charged cell phone.
- Know Your Limits. Our province’s trails can be remote and rugged, each path is unique and conditions vary. When choosing a hike, consider the length and difficulty rating.
