Innu Nation class action lawsuit in Supreme Court Tuesday

Justice, News

A class action lawsuit launched by Innu Nation more than two years ago will begin its hearing in Supreme Court in St. John’s tomorrow. The Supreme Court will hear a certification motion in the class action lawsuit seeking justice for Innu survivors of day schools in Labrador.

The lawsuit, launched in January 2024, is seeking fair treatment for Innu who were excluded from earlier day school settlements due to classifications of Indigenous groups when Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949.

The case points the finger at the federal government for its funding of the schools and the provincial government for its part in running them. The certification hearing will take place from Tuesday through Friday.
