
Search efforts are underway at Cape Spear National Historic Site after two people were swept into the ocean Wednesday afternoon.
Dean Foley, Platoon Chief with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department said shortly after 4 p.m. crews from West End Fire Station responded to Cape Spear after reports of someone having gone into the water.
Upon arrival they discovered a man and a woman had been near the water taking pictures when a wave swept both into the ocean. The man was able to get himself out of the water, but his efforts to rescue the woman were unsuccessful.
The man was taken by paramedics to hospital with reported minor injuries.
A helicopter and fast rescue craft from the Canadian Coast Guard responded to the scene to help in the search for the missing woman. Also on scene were members of the RNC, and paramedics with NL Health Services.
The scene was turned over to the RNC, who advised the public to avoid the area) at about 5:45 p.m. The search for the missing woman has continued into the evening.
