Shane Leonard Sweeney and Dana Joanne Metcalfe — charged with causing a commotion when they reportedly protested outside the premier’s home last summer — were back before a judge in St. John’s today.

The two came to provincial court with a group of about half a dozen supporters.

Sweeney’s lawyer, Sandra Fry, appeared in court via teleconference. She told Judge Mike Madden that she is still in discussions with the prosecution with the hopes of reaching a resolution in the case.

Metcalfe is self-represented and said she hasn’t yet received disclosure from the prosecution. Crown prosecutor Rob Kennedy, a lawyer from Nova Scotia, also appeared via teleconference. He said he would make disclosure available to her. Metcalfe was represented by former St. John’s lawyer Averill Baker before Baker was disbarred.

Both Sweeney and Metcalfe each face single counts of causing a disturbance and criminal harassment. They were charged as a result of a convoy protest that happened on July 9, 2023, when a group, which reportedly included Sweeney and Metcalfe, caused a disturbance outside Premier Andrew Furey’s home in Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s.

The case was set over to next month.
