The City of St. John’s has released a document, outlining some of the challenges facing the downtown core. In recent years, downtown St. John’s has been experiencing change. Through engagement sessions, participants outlined that downtown feels unsafe, particularly at night. Some said there are not enough transit options, and that the downtown core caters too much to vehicles, and not enough to pedestrians. As well as an increase in crime, such as littering, vehicle break-ins and vandalism. The next step now is that a draft of the ‘Neighbourhood Plan’ be created, there will be public consultation surrounding that draft. Finally, its document will be adopted by St. John’s City Council.
