The Canadian Taxpayers Federation estimates the alcohol tax will increase by 4.7 per cent in 2024, and they’re calling for the federal government to drop those plans. The Alcohol Escalator Tax automatically increases federal excise taxes on beer, wine and spirits every year on April 1. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation says Canadians are already struggling with cost hikes and inflation and the federal government should make life more affordable by scrapping the alcohol tax hike. Taxes account for about half the price of beer, 65 per cent of the price of wine and about three quarters of the price of spirits.
