Province welcomes historic federal defence investments at 5 Wing Goose Bay
The provincial government says the federal commitment at 5 Wing Goose Bay is a major step in strengthening Canada’s defence and sovereignty. On Wednesday, Ottawa announced up to $8 billion in long‑term defence investments at 5 Wing Goose Bay, which is designated as one of Canada’s NORAD northern basing infrastructure sites.
The Government of Canada also announced an initial $187 million energy performance contract to upgrade infrastructure at 5 Wing Goose Bay.
These investments underscore the strategic importance of 5 Wing Goose Bay to Canada’s defence and sovereignty, particularly in the North Atlantic and Arctic. The base plays a critical role in supporting military readiness, training and operations for Canada and its allies as Canada modernizes its defence infrastructure.
Defence investments of this scale deliver benefits that extend beyond military operations. They support good‑paying jobs, strengthen the provincial workforce and create opportunities for local businesses – particularly in Labrador and rural communities – while contributing to long‑term economic growth.
“In a province that is truly built for defence, it reinforces Newfoundland and Labrador’s strategic role in national security while delivering meaningful benefits for Labrador and for the entire province – supporting good-paying jobs, strengthening our workforce and creating new economic opportunities as Canada modernizes critical defence infrastructure,” says Premier Tony Wakeham.
