Premier Andrew Furey met with his Atlantic counterparts in Prince Edward Island this afternoon as part of the Council of Atlantic Premiers. The meeting included a number of topics, focusing on health care, wildfire support and labour shortages. All provinces will also be impacted by the implementation of new ‘clean fuel regulations’ adding an increased tax that comes into effect July 1st, which will increase the price of gas and diesel. The premiers discussed what they say will create “a disproportionate burden” on Atlantic Canadians and urged the federal government to re-examine its policy on that issue. On the topic of health care, the council says since it adopted the new Atlantic Physician Registry, 87 physicians have opted in to the Atlantic Program. The program allows physicians to work seamlessly between Atlantic provinces.
