The Barra MacNeils to receive the 2026 Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award

The East Coast Music Association (ECMA) has announced that The Barra MacNeils will receive the 2026 Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing their extraordinary four-decade career and their lasting contribution to Celtic music and Cape Breton’s cultural legacy.

The award will be presented during the 38th East Coast Music Awards Gala, taking place May 21 at Centre 200 in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The Barra MacNeils will also perform live during the show.

Hailing from Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, the Barra MacNeils have spent nearly four decades bringing the spirit of Cape Breton’s Celtic traditions to audiences around the world. Comprised of siblings Kyle, Lucy, Sheumas, Stewart, and Boyd MacNeil, along with longtime collaborator Jamie Gatti, the group is renowned for its extraordinary musicianship, rich sibling harmonies, and electrifying live performances.

Deeply rooted in Celtic music, language, dance, and storytelling, the Barra MacNeils have become one of Canada’s most celebrated Celtic acts. Their concerts blend powerful vocals, intricate instrumental work, stepdancing, and Gaelic songs, creating a vibrant celebration of Cape Breton’s musical heritage.
