Greg Malone returns to LSPU Hall stage July 22-26

Arts & Entertainment, News

Renowned Newfoundland performer Greg Malone returns to the LSPU Hall stage July 22-26 in Richard Three: Pas de Deux, a bold new theatrical adaptation of Shakespeare’s Richard the Third by acclaimed Canadian director Jeannette Lambermont-Morey. The production co-stars Olivia-Graeme McNabb, who plays a variety of characters against Malone’s titular role.

“I love Shakespeare, and I’ve wanted to do Richard the Third since I was in high school, just about,” said actor Greg Malone.

“These guys keep surfacing in our life and in our history; these bullies, these dictators,” continued the 77-year-old actor. “If you read Richard the Third, it’s exactly the rule book for Donald Trump and all of them, all of them…”

Director and playwright/adapter Jeannette Lambermont-Morey has helmed major productions in theatres across Canada and the United States, from the Stratford Festival, to the Virginia Stage Company, for the last 40 years.

A few years ago, she fell in love with Newfoundland and decided to make St. John’s her home-base, while continuing to direct productions across Canada.

“Working with Greg, who is an extraordinary actor, is one of the reasons I decided to move here,” said Lambermont-Morey. “We first met when I directed him in The Merchant of Venice in 2011 out in Cupids.”

“He was absolutely in my mind when I wrote Richard Three: Pas de Deux and finally bringing this to the stage with him – and Olivia-Graeme – is just thrilling.”

Lambermont-Morey’s play asks the question: Why do male authoritarians keep re-emerging – and what is the cost of one woman’s response?

Set inside a museum of 15th-century artifacts, this immersive drama follows the ingenious, embattled Woman (Olivia-Graeme McNabb) as she morphs between iconic figures — from Lady Anne to Queen Elizabeth to Buckingham — to uncover and orchestrate the rise and fall of Richard III (Greg Malone).

Richard Three: Pas de Deux is a boldly theatrical, Shakespeare-informed journey that collapses history and myth into a single, provocative stage experience.
