An arctic air mass will invade the Province and send the mercury down to some of the coldest readings we’ve seen this winter in many areas. Today, the cold, dense arctic air oozes across the province from west to east and north to south. Outside of the West, temperatures in Labrador will fall throughout the day into minus 20s.

On the Island, flurries will be widespread, and the cold air will arrive a little later. In the West, temperatures will peak in the -2 to -3 range in the morning before falling into the minus teens in the afternoon. The same will happen in Central and on the South Coast in the afternoon. Eastern areas will see the cold air arrive in the evening, and temperatures will plummet overnight into the minus teens. Areas of flurries and light snow will be common.

Extreme Cold Warnings are in effect for Labrador West and on the North Coast from now through Wednesday for wind chills as low as -45. The same type of alert is now in effect for the Northern Peninsula for wind chills as low as -35. I expect this type of alert to be scaled up to encompass more of the Province as wind chills for most areas will be in the -25 to -35 range Tuesday afternoon, Tuesday night, and early Wednesday.

As quickly as this cold air comes in, it starts to move out. Wednesday afternoon, temperatures will moderate to near -10 on the island and minus teens in Labrador. There will also be some light snow in much of Labrador and along the West Coast of the Island.

Thursday looks quiet and chilly in the Big Landn, with highs in the minus teens. On the Island, we are going to see highs nearer to 0, however there will be light snow around.

Friday sees a chance of snow late in the day for the eastern third of Newfoundland, which may linger into Saturday. Highs will be near -3. The western two thrids look dry with highs of -3 to -5. Highs will be near -10 in Labrador under sunny skies.

Flurries may linger in the east into Saturday morning, while a dry day looks like for central and western Newfoundland and the South Coast. Highs will be near -2. I also expect sun and cloud in Labrador with highs of -10.
