Trio found guilty of second-degree murder following the death of 31-year-old man in 2024
A verdict was read to Bradley Morrell, Jason Wells, and Veronica Whalen in Supreme Court in St. John’s today. They were all found guilty of second-degree murder.
The trio were charged for their involvement in the 2024 death of 31-year-old Dylan Jordan. It happened on Golf Avenue in St. John’s.
Dylan Jordan was stabbed twice, and received extensive trauma, following assaults from all three. Today Justice Trina Simms said the evidence shows that all three had different levels of involvement in Jordan’s death, but all contributed to his death.
The trial started on June 8 and ran until June 22. Today a series of events that led to the death were outlined, and a murder verdict was determined for three people.
On that day in July of 2024, an altercation ensued between Morrell and Jordan, to which the judge pointed out that Jordan originally started the altercation and threw the first punch. An eyewitness claims that they saw Morrell with a long dark-coloured object which resembled a knife.
Wells and Whalen get involved, allegedly beating Jordan while he was already down on the ground. Between video evidence and eyewitness accounts, it was stated as facts that while Jordan started the altercation, Morrell, Wells, and Whalen continued to aggressively assault him, stomping and kicking Dylan Jordan while he was motionless.
It was determined by the court, beyond a reasonable doubt, that neither of the three acted in self defence. It was also determined that they all committed this crime with intent.
Justice Trina Simms read the guilty verdict to the three accused after reviewing the facts. The accused were shaken by the verdict, while Dylan Jordan’s family and loved ones started to cry and cheer. Veronica Whalen was hysterical. Unable to control her emotions throughout the court proceedings, but especially when the verdict was read.
