Veitch and Norman ready for key playoff matchup today at international under-18 hockey tournament
Two Newfoundland hockey stars are one win away from playing for international gold. Ben Veitch and Quinn Norman, standout players with the hometown Newfoundland Regiment, are wearing the Maple Leaf today as Canada battles Finland in the semifinal of the Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
Veitch, 16, has been putting on a show. The St. John’s native has already scored three goals for Canada in the preliminary round, helping Team Canada storm through the opening stage undefeated. Now, they are a win away from Saturday’s gold-medal game.
Both have quickly become important pieces of the Newfoundland Regiment in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League.
The Hlinka Gretzky Cup has been producing hockey stars for decades. The tournament began back in 1991, originally known as the Three Nations Cup, before becoming the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. It was later renamed the Hlinka Gretzky Cup, honouring two legends of the game – Czech hockey icon Ivan Hlinka and NHL legend Wayne Gretzky.
It has become one of the premier showcases for the world’s best under-18 hockey players, a place where future NHL stars get their first taste of international competition.
The game is set for 7:30 p.m. Newfoundland time.
