Man charged after six-year-old seriously injured in St. John’s hit-and-run
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) has laid charges following a vehicle-pedestrian collision in St. John’s.
At approximately 7:45 p.m. Thursday (July 23), Operational Patrol Services responded to the intersection of Thorburn Road and Larkhall Street where a child had been struck by a vehicle. Prior to police arrival, the suspect vehicle had fled from the scene. Accident Investigation and Forensic Identification Services were engaged to assist the investigation. The pedestrian, a six-year-old boy, was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Thanks to a member of the public, officers were able to quickly locate the suspect vehicle and make an arrest of the 32-year-old male driver who failed a roadside screening test. He was transported to RNC Headquarters where he subsequently failed a breath test.
Tyler Day has been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, failing to remain at the scene resulting in bodily harm, operating over the legal limit, and breaching a probation order. He was also found to be wanted on outstanding warrants. His license was suspended and vehicle impounded. Day was held to appear in court.
RNC Collision Reconstructionists are seeking any witnesses or video footage (CCTV, dash-camera, cell phone) from the area around the time of the collision. Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is asked to contact the RNC at 709-729-8000.
