Justice, News

One man was arrested late Monday after Avalon East District RCMP officers responded to an armed robbery in Mobile. Police are looking for a second suspect, and are asking anyone with information, including video surveillance and dash cam footage, to come forward as soon as possible.

Around 7:15 p.m. on July 13, Ferryland RCMP responded to a report of an armed robbery at a convenience store on the Southern Shore Highway in Mobile. Two unknown, masked suspects entered the store, pointed a firearm at staff and left with a small quantity of money in a black Acura Integra with no licence plate attached. Witnesses reported the vehicle departed in the direction of St. John’s.

Police quickly located the vehicle, and pursued it to Conception Bay South, where it was found abandoned on a trail.

Officers with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) responded to the scene, and with the assistance of their Police Dog Service, one suspect was tracked to a nearby property and taken into custody without incident.

Darryl McDonald, 36, is expected to appear in court today (July 14). He faces charges of:

  • Breaking and entering with intent
  • Use of firearm in committing robbery
  • Disguised with intent
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Using firearm in commission of indictable offence
  • Unlawfully possessing a firearm while under prohibition – two counts
  • Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Obstructing justice
  • Failure to comply with a probation order

Avalon East District RCMP and the East District General Investigation Section (GIS) are searching for the second suspect in this crime, and are asking anyone with information to come forward as soon as possible. This includes any information about the possible owner of the Acura Integra involved in the robbery.

Police are also looking for witnesses, surveillance footage and dash camera footage taken between 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. along the suspects’ path from Mobile, including the Southern Shore Highway, Witless Bay Line, the Trans-Canada Highway, Foxtrap Access Road (Route 60) and Farmland Lane in Conception Bay South.
