Holyrood RCMP tickets unsupervised youth after ATV-vehicle collision
Holyrood RCMP ticketed an unsupervised youth on Monday afternoon after responding to a collision between the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) the youth was operating and a pickup truck. In addition, the ATV was impounded by police for operating on a roadway without insurance. No injuries were reported as a result of the collision.
On July 6, around 1:45 p.m., police in Holyrood responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision on the Conception Bay Highway near Briens Road. The investigation determined that the ATV had stuck the side of a pickup truck while attempting to turn left. No one was injured in the collision, however, the driver of the ATV was under the age of 16, and was not being supervised as required by regulation.
Officers also determined that the ATV did not have the required insurance to be operating on a roadway.
The ATV was damaged in the collision, and was seized by police and impounded. The truck sustained minor damage.
The youth operating the ATV was issued a ticket for operating without supervision.
All parents and guardians are reminded that supervision is mandatory in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. A person under 16 years of age cannot operate an off-road vehicle unless they are supervised by someone who is at least 18 years old, with a valid driver’s licence, and who has completed the training approved by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles.
Youths must be supervised at all times, meaning the person supervising is able to:
- see the operator,
- be seen by the operator,
- provide immediate direction to the operator.
