RCMP seize two vehicles in separate traffic stops

Justice, News

Placentia-Whitbourne RCMP seized two vehicles during separate traffic stops Thursday evening, including one involving an Ontario man charged with impaired driving.

Police say an officer on patrol in New Harbour stopped a vehicle shortly after 6 p.m. after recognizing the driver as a woman with a suspended licence.

The 41-year-old woman was also found to be driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and owing more than $20,000 in outstanding fines.

She is scheduled to appear in court at a later date on charges of driving while suspended and operating a vehicle without valid insurance. Police seized and impounded the vehicle.

About an hour later, RCMP responded to a report of a possible impaired driver in Cavendish after residents reported a man showing signs of alcohol impairment near the beach.

Officers located the vehicle parked with the 51-year-old Ontario man inside. He was arrested and taken to the Whitbourne detachment, where breath samples confirmed he was over the legal limit, police said.

He is charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle and operating with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit. His driver’s licence was suspended, his vehicle was impounded and he was held in custody overnight. He is scheduled to appear in provincial court at a later date.

RCMP are reminding the public that a person can be charged with impaired operation while in care or control of a vehicle, even if it is parked and the engine is off. They encourage anyone who suspects an impaired driver to call 911 immediately.
