RNC remind boaters to prioritize safety on the water
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is reminding boaters of the importance of safety on the water as the recreational groundfish fishery is set to begin.
With an extended season which begins tomorrow (July 1), the RNC is anticipating a larger than normal number of people participating in the food fishery. Whether a seasoned fisher, or a first-timer, all boaters should be prepared for cold water temperatures and changing weather conditions.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, the RNC reminds boaters to:
- Always wear a properly fitted personal flotation device.
- Tell a family member or friend your plans and when you expect to return.
- Pack and check your safety gear before heading out and ensure you have the proper equipment in case of an emergency.
- Carry reliable means of communication, such as a fully charged mobile phone, VHF radio.
- Know the weather forecast and be prepared for sudden changes.
- Keep your speeds reasonable and be respectful of other boaters.
