Province requesting feedback on proposed Forest Management Agreement
The Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands is seeking public feedback on a proposed 20-year Forest Management Agreement with Sexton Lumber Company Ltd., which includes issuing a 20-year Crown Timber Licence to the company.
Sexton Lumber has requested to enter into a 20-year Forest Management Agreement with the province for a non-exclusive area of forest in central Newfoundland.
The agreement and accompanying Crown Timber Licence would offer Sexton Lumber the security of a long-term timber supply and enable the company to invest in its sawmill infrastructure and the timber resource.
Members of the public are invited to learn more about the proposal and provide feedback through the EngageNL platform or by emailing FMA@gov.nl.ca. The consultation is open until July 24.
Targeted consultation sessions will also be held with key stakeholder groups to ensure diverse perspectives are reflected.
“With a vision to increase mill production at its Bloomfield sawmill from 60 million to 100 million board feet of lumber per year, Sexton Lumber Co. is working to identify new revenue sources from viable wood-based projects,” says Pleaman Forsey, Minister of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands. “I encourage anyone with an interest in the province’s forest resources to provide their feedback on this proposed Forest Management Agreement.”
