N.L. Conservative MP’s release joint statement on potential Marine Atlantic disruption
There are concerns for the Marine Atlantic ferry service today as a potential strike looms. Now, the provinces conservative MP’s have released a joint statement, regarding the potential labour disruption.
Carol Anstey, MP for Long Range Mountains, Jonathan Rowe, MP for Terra Nova–The Peninsulas, and Clifford Small, MP for Central Newfoundland, said the federal Liberals have failed to show leadership despite months of ongoing negotiations between Marine Atlantic and its workers.
The MPs stressed that Marine Atlantic’s Port aux Basques and Argentia routes are vital transportation links for the province, carrying passengers and essential goods including groceries, fuel, prescription medications, medical supplies and commercial freight. They warned that any disruption would have immediate consequences for families, businesses and communities across Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Conservatives also argued that the federal government cannot distance itself from issues involving one of its Crown corporations, saying workers deserve a fair deal, businesses need certainty and residents deserve confidence in the services they rely on.
