Shakespeare by the Sea Festival partners with local community centres for “All the Town’s a Stage”
The 34th annual Shakespeare by the Sea Festival’s “All the Town’s a Stage” is bringing their outdoor shows to brand new venues this summer between July 12 and Aug. 8.
“This season looks at what it means to be a citizen of our world right now,” said artistic director Sharon King-Campbell. “We are looking at leadership, friendship, love and forgiveness.”
“We want to engage meaningfully with these subjects with our community – including folks who might not have had the opportunity to engage with SBTS before.”
Performances will take place for the first time in the heart of some of St. John’s most iconic neighbourhoods: Froude Avenue, Eric & MacKay, Buckmaster’s Circle, Chaulker Place, and Virginia Park. As well, the Festival will produce again at the Alt Hotel in downtown St. John’s as well as in Mount Pearl.
“Partnering with the Froude Avenue, Buckmaster’s Circle, and Virginia Park Community Centres, plus the Boys and Girls Club of St. John’s is a really cool opportunity for us,” said board chair Jenn Deon.
“Our vision is that “Shakespeare is for everyone – yes everyone!” so offering performances – for free – in these new venues is a great way for us to share the timeless delight of Shakespeare with new audiences.”
“We are very excited to partner with Shakespeare by the Sea Festival to be able to present the performance of the Two Gentlemen of Verona in our community of Froude Avenue,” said Enid Pendergast, Executive Director, Froude Avenue Community Centre. “This opportunity allows us to support the theatre arts as well as bringing people together. A wonderful way to provide entertainment and foster a sense of community.”
Three shows will be presented by the company this summer:
- Shakespeare’s swashbuckler Henry IV-Part One, directed by Luke Rowe – Sunday & Monday evenings July 12-August 3
- Shakespeare’s comedy The Two Gentlemen of Verona, directed by Sharon King-Campbell – Friday & Saturday evenings July 17-August 8
- A new show for all ages by Nabila Qureshi and Abdullah Omar Saif, Binja, directed by Santiago Guzmán – Saturdays July 18-August 8
