Police seize millions of contraband cigarettes

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) has charged an Ontario man with trafficking following the seizure of contraband cigarettes in Labrador West.

At approximately 7:45 a.m on Friday (June 5), Operational Patrol Services in the Labrador West district responded to a single-vehicle collision on the Trans-Labrador Highway, east of Labrador City. Information received was that a trailer had overturned and was blocking the roadway. There were no injuries reported.

An investigation of the collision led police to discover a significant quantity of contraband cigarettes in the trailer and as a result, officers seized 21,250 cartons of contraband cigarettes, totalling 4,250,000 cigarettes with a street value of over $2-million.

Thirty-year-old Jordan White of Ontario was held appear in court on the charge of Trafficking in Contraband Tobacco.
