Court order escalates seafood dispute between FFAW and ASP

Business, Justice, News

Tensions heated up over the weekend between the FFAW and the Association of Seafood Producers, after the FFAW was ordered by the Supreme Court to cease and desist from any further authorization of the ongoing tie-up.

FFAW officials had threatened to stop crab from being processed in the province until they negotiated a fair price. Earlier this month, the price-setting panel chose the Association of Seafood Producers’ offer of $5.30 per pound.

The FFAW says harvesters cannot be forced to fish for a price that is not economically feasible. In a statement from the ASP, they say harvesters need to know that it is their own individual business choice to go fishing and landing their catch to processors in the province is free from violence and threats.

The court order is in effect until a full hearing before the Labour Relations Board scheduled for April 21st.
