Decision looms on MUN’s Graduate Student Union
Memorial University’s Graduate Student Union’s fate will be determined this evening, but union representatives are hopeful that a renewed health and dental plan deal and a payment plan will be enough for members to vote to keep the union.
Last month, a petition was put forth to dissolve the graduate union, which represents about 2,500 students, following concerns of significant debt. The union owes approximately $1.6 million dollars to its insurance provider Green Shield and more than $350,000 to the Canadian Federation of Students. On Tuesday, the union announced that Green Shield Health and Dental has approved the renewal of its plan for September 2026. An agreement has also been reached that includes a structured repayment plan, with no increase to student fees, which had previously been proposed.
The G.S.U will hold its annual general meeting tonight, followed by a vote on whether or not to dissolve the union. Representatives of the union and C.F.S. are hopeful that by securing this deal, students will vote not to dissolve the union.
