Happy Valley-Goose Bay submits input on Churchill River hydro deal

Business, News

The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay has submitted its input to the Independent Churchill River Review Committee, which is looking at the proposed deal between Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Hydro-Québec.

The town says as the community closest to the Churchill River, it must have the resources and planning tools needed to manage the impacts of any future hydro development.

Mayor Bert Pomeroy says the lessons of the Muskrat Falls project cannot be repeated.

“Happy Valley-Goose Bay is at the heart of any future development on the Churchill River, and the town must be recognized as a major stakeholder in this process,” Pomeroy said. “Large-scale projects cannot succeed if our community is left without the resources and capacity needed to support growth, protect residents, and plan for the future.”

The town is encouraging residents, community groups, businesses and regional stakeholders to submit input before the March 1 deadline.

Submissions can be made at churchillriverreview.ca.
